Reflections on the MWC Mobile World Congress 2021 01st July - 03rd July in Barcelona Spain

With NAB, CabSat and IBC all looming large on the horizon is the industry is waking from its on

By Peter Garland

I attended MWC and it was good to get the ' feel ' of an exhibition after nearly 18 months

In order to enter Spain you needed a negative Covid test plus a Spanish passenger location form

Face masks are compulsory in the exhibition and not any old face mask can be worn - it must be a FFP2 type mask - some international also stipulate the wearing of the FFP2 mask

In order enter the enter the venue, attendees must -;-

Register using your passport and upload a photo

Then you must download the MWC app and upload your negative Covid test certificate - a health declaration form must be ticked

You can then use the MWC app or facial recognition toe enter the exhibition

Should you not have a Covid test you can pay 15Euro and have a test done  on site

However I would advise you to have a test before you arrive as the queues were at least an hour long

There were a few negative test all young people who were enjoying socialising the city's nightlife - these negative results are passed to the Barcelona health authority.

The show itself was not very busy - 20,000 expected - usually at least 100,000 attend previous shows

Because of the favourable weather the outdoor venues were very popular

Keynotes were broadcast from one main show floor stage. and there were many single session trained executive presenters rather than panels.

Some of the halls were empty and some big names were noticeable by their absence

The companies wish to keep their staff safe

And now the bad news -;-

In order to fly home a Negative Covid test is required by all airlines

These tests were available at the venue with results being available within 24 hours

The cost was 80 Euro

Usually the test consists of a nasal swab or a throat swab or both

My test was booked for 11.15am on Tuesday and our flights were on Thursday

I finally got tested at 12.30 with many attendees getting very annoyed with the chaotic organisation of the tests

People were jumping the queue and getting very irritated

You were given your own test kit which consisted of a small tube which you had to spit into - a very easy way to spread the disease !

You then returned the sample and they would email you with the results which you present to the airline on departure

I didn't receive my results within 24 hours and because of the chaotic atmosphere at the test centre in the exhibition I went into the city and had to get another test

My results from the original test taken of Tuesday arrive on Friday at 14.30   !!!!!!!

Overall it was the ground breaking return of the exhibition industry

Positivity was felt that we have turned the corner on getting the virus under control

Exhibition organisers have found a way to stage a show which will keep exhibitors and visitors alike safe and healthy

NAB, CabSat and IBC all loom large on the horizon

The industry is waking from its slumber
