NOA to Participate in FIAT/IFTA 2020 Virtual Seminar

Will detail how in-house industrial digitization supports long-term archiving strategies 

AV digitizing and archiving specialist NOA GmbH has confirmed its participation in the FIAT/IFTA Regional Seminar 2020, which will take place virtually Sept. 29–30.

Event organizers announced on social media they would hold the event online this year due to the continued health crisis. Organized in collaboration with Brazilian public broadcaster TV Cultura. FIAT/IFTA will feature two days of online presentations and discussions, tailored to the needs of broadcast archiving in Brazil and the rest of Latin America. 

This year’s seminar will highlight a number of aspects pertinent to the archiving world today. In addition to taking a close look at the audiovisual scene in Latin America — among one of the richest in the world, it’ll also study how the digitization of visual culture repertoires has altered media consumption. And how this behavioral change is impacting the preservation and access to media collections.

“Media archives are not only an asset in the economic sense, but perhaps even more in the cultural and political sense,” the organization expresses on its website. “How to manage, organize, preserve, annotate, digitize, access and valorize these archives is therefore not just an investment for and by shareholders, but for and by society as a whole.” 

Jean-Christophe Kummer, managing director and co-founder of Austria-based AV digitizing and archiving specialist NOA GmbH, will present a paper on Sept. 29 at 1:20 p.m. BRT (6:20 p.m. CEST).

During his discussion, Kummer will cover the concept of in-house industrial digitization to help overcome the threat of  “degralescence” (a combination of degradation and obsolescence), and its effect on audiovisual preservation for future generations.

“When embarking on a large-scale digitization project, institutions are confronted with many challenges. These can include the choice of equipment, staff allocation and training, carrier manager methods or project financing, Industrial digitization is the only way to sustain a long-term and cost-conscious strategy in AV archive preservation,” explained Kummer.

“Many archives still struggle with providing access to their legacy content and with developing a long-term digital preservation strategy,” he added. “Even though challenging enough on its own, mass migration of physical collections to the digital domain is only the first big step. It takes more to build a state of the art media repository. Organizing and describing the sounds and images within the archive is a most vital prerequisite, let alone storage and essence management.”

Kummer’s speech will offer insight into various facilities worldwide that have successfully embraced and implemented in-house digitization. He’ll explain how these organizations have managed to optimize their production output and improve cost-efficiency by implementing the principles of industrial manufacturing processes.
